Which CWS Models This Applies To

Signs Your CWS Window Replacement Is Failing

• The sash drops or won’t stay open. The coil balance has lost tension, usually from corrosion in the balance shoe channel. In Pinewood’s salt-air environment, we’ve seen balances fail at six years where inland ratings suggest twelve.
• Visible moisture between the glass panes. The CWS insulated glass seal has breached, and the desiccant is saturated. Once you see haze, the Low-E coating is already degrading; defogging kits don’t restore the U-factor.
• The lock won’t engage or pops loose. The keep has worn or the sash has settled out of square, often from foundation movement common in Pinewood’s limestone substrate. We check plumb with a 4-foot level before ordering parts.
• Frame cracking at the corners or weep holes. CWS vinyl profiles expand roughly 1/8 inch per 10 feet of frame in summer heat. If the installer didn’t leave proper shim gaps, the frame stresses at the weld.
• Air infiltration at the meeting rail. The weatherstrip has compressed past recovery or the interlock fin has deformed. On CWS units, the fin is co-extruded, not replaceable separately; the sash assembly swaps as one piece.

DIY or Call Us?

What we don’t recommend: removing a CWS impact-rated sash solo. The sash on a 36-by-60-inch Series 500 weighs 45-55 pounds, and the tilt latches release with asymmetric force that can torque the frame.
